She gets hundreds of Valentine cards every year. So does her cat.

And now, just for you, Persnickerty shares her famous heart-shaped sugar cookies because who doesn’t love the smell of sugar cookies baking in the oven? And the delicious sensation of light, crumbly cookies that melt in your mouth?

This will make 60 or more cookies of assorted sizes, that taste divine!

What you need:

  • 1 cup butter (2 sticks)
  • 1 cup confectioner’s sugar
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp cream of tartar
  • pink sugar for decoration
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 4 cups flour

How to do it:

Cream together the fats (butter and oil) and all the sugars. Add the vanilla and eggs. Sift together the soda, cream of tartar and flour and add to creamy mixture. Stir until you have dough. Then chill the bowl in the fridge for approximately an hour.

Set the oven to 350ºF degrees.

Prepare the cookie sheets and grease and flour them. Divide the dough into three of four parts and roll into balls. Use what you need, you can keep the rest in the fridge for a few days.

Take the dough and roll not too thinly on a well floured surface. Take an assortment of heart shaped cookie cutters (we found our in the 99¢ store – what a deal!) and cut out the cookies, putting them on the greased cookie sheet.

Sprinkle pink sugar on the cookies.  Bake for 8-12 minutes. Cookies are done when they are just starting to brown.

Let them cool.  Then see how long you can wait before tasting more than one!!!
